Note: This historical study is a companion piece to the Fall of Empires: Edelweiss Division scenario book.
The enormous battles fought in the latter half of 1914 on the dusty (and later snow-covered) plains of Galicia, the southern region of Poland ruled by Austria-Hungary, would determine the fate of Europe for the next century and longer. Overlooked even at the time, the outcome of this pivotal campaign resonates today in the vicious Russian assault on democratic Ukraine.
Galicia 1914 is a historical study of these campaigns, from the opening salvoes of August 1914 through the December 1914 Battle of Limanowa, the last victory won solely by Austro-Hungarian arms. It’s a story of courage and horror, as the old empires of Eastern Europe destroyed themselves and called it “victory.”
